Replacing rear speakers on 87 camaro vert
So, I've already replaced my rear speakers with the shallowest speakers I could find. However, I had to use spacers which I'm not happy with
. Has any used any speaker that sounds decent that can be mounted flush? Thanks

Re: Replacing rear speakers on 87 camaro vert
The build quality of the convertibles vary widely. Some convertibles can fit a normal speaker of 6" or 6x9 without any trouble while others like myself had to find the shallowest 6" speaker and still cut and reweld the fender /door pillar brace. My drivers side went in w/o modifications but the passenger side I had to. Other nuances exist. Best solution is to remove the vinyl from that rear speaker panel and do an over mold with fiberglass to move the speaker inboard and then just recover with vinyl.

Those 6x9s in those speaker sets won't work. The stock 6x9 rockford fosgate may work from the first link but my guess is they won't either. As I said, the convertibles are too varied in tolerances.

I bought the Polk DB461 4x6 from Amazon for the dash and rear. They went in flush in the rear, under the factory grilles.

They are really quite good but, like all 4x6, the bass is not sufficient for "front" speaker duty. My dash ones are coming out (they've been in there a month) and are being replaced with 6-1/2 two-way Polk separates in the door and tweeter in the dash location.

Why would you hack your doors up when you can install speakers in the kick panel area?

Re: Replacing rear speakers on 87 camaro vert
I'm not sure what you are asking. The 4x6s went into the stock speaker locations. No mods needed. Dash and rear passenger sides.
That being said, today I started carving out my door panel for 6-1/2 separates. The 4x6 size without an enclosure (dash) is just too small for an essentially full range speaker (I have a bazooka in the trunk but for the bass instruments its not good). So in goes the separates. I don't like the idea of modding my convertible but I figure door speakers is a pretty obvious and essential upgrade. I got the passenger door hole cut and driver fit done today. It's a tight fit for flush mount but its in. If I ever want to hide it, I can find new door panels. Next goes in silencer mat and I'll need to spend some time on rattles. I also need to refurbish the door hinges.
