Speaker recommendations needed
Hey guys, I've got an 85' TA that the previous owner was kind enough to take all but one speaker out of. I just bought a stock radio, and am wondering where I can get stock/ OEM replacement speakers? I know very little about sound systems, and would like to stay as close to stock as possible for a decent price.

If you want a stock GM 4 x6 I believe the original part number was 16047855 which later changed to 15173232. I think that you can still get new GM 15173232 speakers for about $40.00 each.
Just double check these part numbers.

Pioneer and Kenwood tend to be on the low cost side at $50-$60 a pair and will be just as good, if not better, then a stock set.

I wouldn't go too fancy. These cars weren't designed for a good sound; the placement - specifically the rears - is odd, there's pretty much no sound deadening in place and plenty of road noise to compete with the music. To keep a somewhat stock appearance, I put in an early 2000's era Delco CD player but since it's so much stronger than what it replaced, the speakers distorted. I replaced the original speakers with Boston Acoustics but it still doesn't sound good to my ears. If your third gen is your daily driver, you won't know any better so you'll get used to it. But if your third gen is a fair weathered vehicle like mine, your ears aren't going to enjoy the sound when compared to that of your daily driver's system.

I put these Polks in. Went right in. Nice sound. Bass is tough with any 4x6 but these do ok

Why would you want to put stock replacement wizzer cone speakers that sound like ***? Aftermarket speakers usually have better parts, separate tweeters, and don't resonate anywhere as much as the $1 ones GM used in these cars.

LOL, why wouldn't you want a stock sound system. If your going to restore a 3rd gen isn't the sound system a vital part of it,all I see on this forum is replaceing with JUNK AFTERMARKET REPLACEMENT, what'sit last a couple years? I don't know what your system ,but mine lasted for 25 yrs before it had to be restored

I really do appreciate the beauty of sticking as close to stock as I can. I bought the whole stock system recommended (thanks Manta!) and I'm not too fussy about having the absolute best sound quality, so I'm squared away. Thanks for the input guys.

Speakers are easily replaced and can be brought back to stock without any trace of modification - like wheels and tires.
Why would you not want to have good aftermarket speakers for not so much money compared to the paper wizzer cones that came stock?
