Plug and Play adapter for 4th Gen Stereo

Hey guys,

I have one of these but don't feel like tearing my car apart to find the part number. I've searched on here for over an hour and nothing is coming up. Who knows the adapter part number to direct swap a 4th gen stereo into a third gen?

You mean the wiring? Would depend on the wiring, but early 4th gen are probably going to be the same as late thirdgen, so you'd need the pigtails for the later radio and adapter for the early radio's wiring, then splice them together.

Here is the Adapter that I use most of the time.

There's a 'regular' version too without the extra/optional plugs. This is good for most early eighties ( big plugs) to the nineties style ( small plugs ) radio conversions.

On the type of 4th gen Stereo pictured below,...... The factory plug ( Speakers and Power ) for this radio is PIN-for-PIN the same as earlier plugs. But the earlier style "small plug" front speaker connector must have the locking tab removed before it will fit into this type of radio. ( Plug for that exact radio shown at bottom of the pic )

That looks like the one I used to install a late 3rd gen CD player into my '88 John. Had all the plugs I needed for power antennae and UQ7 subwoofer.

Hello. So if I'm reading this correctly, I can use a 96 and up cd/am/fm in my 90 bird? All I have to do is cut the blue tab? And will the unit itself deminsionally the same size as my 90 bird unit? Will it fit in the dash opening?

Re: Plug and Play adapter for 4th Gen Stereo

While I have never installed a 4th gen Firebird radio into a Thirdgen Firebird myself I have seen several pictures here on TGO of other members doing exactly that. Yes,... the locking tab on the blue plug will need to be removed in order to fit the plug into the 4th gen radio. I'm also ASSUMING that the side mounting brackets on the 4th gen radio MIGHT need to be trimmed in order to properly fit into the Firebird Radio/HVAC pod. ( The side brackets on the 4th gen radio are 'permanent' - or part of the radio - and a bit larger than the Thirdgen brackets. )
