why is my amp doing this?

ok heres the story...

I have a clarion 4 channel amp that runs my 6x9s and subs. Its a 400w amp. I have the subs bridged and the 6x9s not bridged.

ok heres the problem...

It seems that after a long period of listening to my music, the amp tends to fade out. It sounds like the highs coming from the 6x9s are more 'muffled'. And after, say, a couple of minutes.. the 'muffled' noise will go away... sometimes it wont go away and it generally sounds like ****.

Whats the problem? how can it be fixed?

any help is, well you know.. appreciated

Clarion. Christ. You said that the first time. I gotta pay better attention . Anyway, for the most part, a clarion amp should be pretty reliable, but I suppose there are always exceptions. It sounds to me like the amp is getting heat-soaked. Try mounting it in an area where it can get better airflow over the heat sinks, or throw a fan on it.

Jim, yes this could be. I have the amp mounted the back of my box and the box is wedged down into the trunk well. So basically its totally surrounded by carpet.

But it has some kind of internal 'cooling' system, does that just mean it wont totally shut off??

and finally, would you suggest an amp rack placed on top of the gas tank with no tinted hatch window?? thats the only place it will get enough airflow with the windows down. ya know?

please help,

Also look a the Ohm's of the Subs! Your amp may not be capable of handling 2ohm mono but it can handle 2ohm stereo!?! If your (2)subs are 4ohm and you have 2ohm (parrelle)

Out,

If the amp is stuffed down in the well, it's going to overheat. The internal cooling system is usually just a fan or some heat sinks. Problem is, if it's surrounded by 150 degree air, it's not going to cool very well. It needs ventilation in order to get cooler air through there to cool the amp. I would suggest moving the amp, and making sure it's mounted horizontally with the top of the amp facing up (i.e. don't mount it upside down). Also, rpettway has a very good point. That amp is going to get very hot if you are driving it with too low of an impedance. In a bridged configuration, that amp should not see less than a 4 ohm load.

ok ive already decided to move the amp to on top of the gas tank, and ive also decided to make some kind of amp rack just for looks.

Also, i would need to get the hatch window tinted out. How much $$ we lookin at? I was told about $100.

And what percent should i get it tinted?

thanks,

kev

most likely the heat problem. If not from not enough air then I would check the way you have your speaker wired. I dont think your supposed to run an amp with bridged and non Bridged. You might be running the amp with two diff. ohms or just over working the amp making it unstable and over heating.

i think its just the heat problem now. Cuz when it overheats, its always when i have the windows up, and the heat on (gets cold in Jersey). But i also found that when i just turn the heat down a bit.. so its somewhat cool air coming out, the amp plays fine.

any other suggestions?
