89 GTA steering wheel controls
Mine work only when they want to. Why? How can I fix it to where they work all of the time?

That would depend on what the problem is. There is only 1 wire that goes from the controls to the radio. It could be the circuitry within the wheel, the wire or the radio that's at fault. The easiest is to try and swap the radio and/or steering wheel with another in an attempt to troubleshoot the source of the problem.

I would guess that the contacts on the buttons are dirty. See if it is possible to pull off the buttons (like you can do to computer keyboards) and clean underneath. If not, they make a product called contact cleaner that comes as a liquid in a spray can. You can spray it under the buttons to clean dirty contacts.

As far as weather, I don't believe cold causes problems, maybe humidity. That really is the deal, there is no real pattern. Sometimes it works beautifully, and other times barely works, and other times not at all. My radio works fine as far as just pushing its buttons. Maybe it is the "one wire" connecting the radio to the controls. I'll jump on it this weekend and see if I can figure it out. i'd hate to take it to a car stereo shop and get screwed out of my money for a simple fix.
the buttons work on led slip ring system. Ive since replaced the stock unit with a poineer cd player along with an adapter for the steering wheel bottons. my buttons are slow to react on low subfreezing temps but i don't know if its the bottons slip ring or adaptor that needs to warm up.
One thing that I'm happy about I took out that piece of junk stock radio, the steering wheel controls still work, I Can listen to CD-wr or cd-r, and I now get FM stations
