Instalation kit trim out

Well I finally got around to installing my new Sony receiver in the Z. I have only had the radio for 10 months now, not sure why it took so long but it did. When I bought the car it cam with one of the "kits" for the install. Not sure the brand as all the parts and harness was in a zip lock bag. It is one that has a CD slot below the radio so the radio sits higher up and not in the center. I was not keen on this slot as it really will only store CD's and is deep so if something slides down all the way back it will be a pain to retrieve.

So I decided I wanted to cover the slot. I wanted it to look the same as the rest of the plastics used. I made this out of 1/8 PVC plastic. It could be made out of any thin rigid plastic or aluminum. The 2 small blocks are VHB taped to the back and the just slide in and hold the plate in place.

If you notice the finish it looks pretty good just sitting in my hand. This comes straight out of a spray can and has the texture built right in. One shot! This is not an interior paint, it is actually an exterior coating that you can get any where. It looks amazing! it matches that factory hard plastic texture to the tee. I think if you scuffed and sanded your original parts this may just be the ticket to refinishing interior hard plastics.

Any angle you look at it looks exactly the same. The product I used is Rustoleum Truck Bed Coating. One coat is all it took. It is a hard coat made for exterior use so it should last. There are other truck bed coatings out there but I don't think the finish is the same.

That truck bed coating produces a very convincing looking finish. Nice work.
