On a factory U1A Delco CD stereo.....

..... what does the "COMP" control button on the RH side of the front face do? All that I can tell it does is that it reduces the volume..... is this some kind of control that compensates for interior noise or the like?

Thanks.

It means compression...probably works only in CD mode.

It basically makes the soft parts of the song a little louder.

What's it for? Imagine you're on the highway with the windows open, listening to classical music. The loud parts of the music sound great, but the little quiet parts, you can barely hear.

Turn the compression on and it brings everything to a more constant volume and overcomes the road noise a little better.

P.S. Most FM radio stations compress all the music they play. By keeping the levels up, it's harder to hear the static and hiss in the background...it gets them more listners (customers) at the far end of their transmitting range.
