Ohms. How serious is it to run aftermarket speakers?

I didn't even think this was a thing until I saw a post on FB. I have a factory head unit and aftermarket modern speakers (2 in front and 2 in the rear). They don't match the stock ohms- should I be worried? Not seen a conclusive answer to this.

Re: Ohms. How serious is it to run aftermarket speakers?

Thanks both. So what are my options to run 4 x 4 ohm speakers? Line level converters or sound processors?

I do not know the year of your car, but my '84 Trans Am has two sets of speakers. The fronts ohmage is different that the rears. I don't remember which is which but a may be able to obtain that info from the shop manuals. Could be 4 ohm in rear & 8 or 10 ohm in the front. to make 4 ohm work with 8 ohm amp, u would have connect two 4 ohm speakers serially

If not a Bose system those 4 ohm speakers will probably screw up the radio if you play it loud. Might get by with 8 ohm speakers to replace the 10 ohm OE.

8 ohms will work fine to replace the 10 ohm speakers. Been there & done that on my '72 Buick GS am/fm stereo+8track player. All 4 speakers are 8 ohms

Re: Ohms. How serious is it to run aftermarket speakers?

Well, I think I resolved this I bought a in-line mini amp.-, great little thing. I was able to shuffle it up by the cruise control module and it sits between the head unit and the speakers- taking the strain of the OG Delco. Excuse the italics and the spray paint on my nail! This is the amp https://vibeaudio.co.uk/product/powerbox65-4m-v7

It means I can keep my 4 ohm speakers, and protect the AC amp best I can. Sounds good and loud now. Hope this helps people.

Good deal. And that's a real compact amp, kind of surprised with that.

Advancements in tech! I can also run RCA from it to a passive underseat Sub if needed later

I installed a small Clarion in my car a few years back. Works well. Crazy small.

Re: Ohms. How serious is it to run aftermarket speakers?

Well thanks for that- fascinating and inspiring post!! Looks great but it looks like you had way more choice for places to install the amp- the front of the dash on the passenger side can be removed on TA's! Not so on the Camaro. Great job and I just lost an hour reading it

Re: Ohms. How serious is it to run aftermarket speakers?

Yes, dash layout is somewhat different. But similar to my '91 Camaro RS, this small amp was added into the "space" about the passenger's side hush panel under the dash.
