Do the cerwin vega vega 15" sub(s) have to be ported? If not, how many cubic feet per sub would you recommend a box having? Thanks?

 

I am assuming this is the Vega series, either the 154 or 15d4.
They recommend ported enclosures on both models.
Now the size of the enclosure is going to depend on the amount of power you are planning to run.
Let us know what amp and power range to better answer your question.

 

The vega series is designed for ported applications and needs a HUGE box. That's the main reason why I don't run vegas.

****, I was hoping I could get away with using a sealed box and pumping out 500X1 rms. I hate building ported boxes cause they are so damn big.

I would never, ever put a Vega in a sealed box. You must use a well designed ported box or you will be very unhappy with an otherwise good sub.
