anyone ever tried to modify that hole to fit a double din?? just asking. Don't kill me.

Too much work for me. I'm thinking about a 1.5 din unit just because I don't want to try to flush mount a din sized unit. I hate it when something sticks out from the dash.

 

I really dont't think it would be hard at all if you just completely redesigned the part of the dash that has the heater control's too.

It's very easy to flush mount a DIN sized head unit. You only need the GM install kit that doesn't "stick out" and use a heat gun to gently warm up the heater ducts enough to reshape them out of the way for the increased depth.

 

I've done it. I have a DIN size radio and a DIN size Kenwood EQ underneath. I used the stock faceplate and trimmed about half an inch off of the bottom of the plate. Then, I cut that piece in half. Matching the grid pattern, I epoxyed the two pieces to the sides to giove it an ultra clean look. I'll take some pictures of it tonight.

I fit 2 Eclipse decks, a Tape deck and a CD deck underneath it when I was in high school. I have to go look for the pictures and scan them cause my digital camera broke. It’s not too hard to do, it just takes time and patience. I had to take out the old mounting metal bracket from the old deck. Cut above and bellow for clearance but the decks barely fit. The top deck rubs the AC unit and the bottom hits the floor. Since the bottom deck is on the floor, all the wires in back are jammed either on the left or right sides of the decks. If not the decks will not mount flush with the faceplate. It’s also hard to mount the decks because when you take out the metal bracket from the existing deck you have nothing to mount the double decks too. I then got a piece of plastic that matched the stock faceplate and cut the opening to size. I’ll go look for the pictures and post it when I get a chance.

Sorry it took so long but here is the picture of my Eclipse tape and CD deck in my 84 Trans Am.

 

IMO it looks nice a graphic eq might have LOOKED better but its clean looking ang i like that. better than an adapter. where did you get the plastic. thanks for the picture anyone else got an opinion? Pics?

Yes, I agree with you, I’m planning to put a ½ din EQ and a CD deck together in my 88 GTA. It’s going to be a lot easier then cutting to fit a double din. When I was in high school I thought it would be cool if I could play tapes and CDs in the car, hence what you are looking at now. I eventually got the money to buy an EQ and I put it in the dash above the AC controls and it barely fit too. Anyway I got the plastic from the stereo store I bought the decks from. I’m pretty sure it’s a common thing for any stereo shop that does custom installs.

 

I was wondering this too because I want a Minidisc unit but none play CDs too except one which is double DIN. I can either get that or get a MD one and a CD one, or a MD one with a CD changer but I'd rather have it all in the dash area.
