I'm not going for a huge system here, just a CD player where I can listen to tunes while I cruise. Right now the stock AM/FM/Tape can't be turned up all the way cause it sounds like absolute crap. If I were to just replace the head unit will it solve the problem and will the speakers handle it sufficiently?

stock speakers are 8 ohm (maybe even 10 ohm, I'm not sure) so you will only use half or less of the rated power of your cd-player. also, the 4x52 watts is a peak number, I'm sure. My guess is the stock speakers will recieve 10 watts per channel or less. Should still be a noticable improvement. I say go for it.

I'd say no...
just replacing the head unit does little to improve your sound...yes you will notice a difference because cd is a better source medium, HOWEVER, the speaker is ultimatly the component that reproduces the sounds that it receives, and quality of the source isn't going to affect it that much, you can't get QUALITY sound out of ***t speakers.
your money will always be better spent on better speakers than a better deck, but a deck is the beginning... replace both if you can

I usually also suggest new speakers first because that will give the biggest improvement in sound, BUT, the delco decks are so bad, that I suggest replacing those first. The stock speakers can actually sound pretty good when you adjust the bass/treble a little bit on the new decks. Just don't expect the speakers to survive for long if you crank the bass and the loudness on the deck.
