question

i was just wondering if you power subwoofers with the car stereo receiver, isn't there a good chance that the receiver amp could overheat? that's what i was told a long time ago. i know a guy that's powering his subs that way and he says "i don't ever have any problems with it" he has a kenwood receiver with 2 15" kenwood subs.

You could, but the power would not be sufficient enough for the good, loud sound that a separate amp could give you.

The resistance value, or OHM load, will determine how hot the receiver gets.

Most car decks can handle a 4 Ohm load to the internal amplifiers.
So, If you hook up a 4 OHM sub to each channel, you will not overheat the deck.
If you hooked up a DVC sub to create a 2 OHM load to one channel, then yea, it will overheat and probably fail in the long run.

I don't think anyone would recommend running a sub off of a deck's internal amps. Most decks push a max of anywhere from 10 - 15 watts of CLEAN power.
You have to watch out for the stereo manufactures, they will rate a deck's amps at 50 watts, but if you look at the distortion factor, it's probably more like 15 watts. Anymore then that, and the THD levels get way up there. This not only sounds horrible, but can damage speakers.
