Steering Pad Radio Controls Cutting Out

Lately my radio controls on the steering wheel pad only work sometimes. The controls right on the radio itself still work fine, but the wheel controls are not working sometimes. No fuse blowing. Loose wire somewhere? Major PITA ? Remove steering column ?
Thanks

Hey Steve,

Looks like we are the only 2 guys on the board who have had this radio control problem, huh ?

I had the same problem. It was the radio. I thought it was the controls but i was wrong. I had the electronic cassette radio. Took it out and out in a new one.

I can still use the controls on the radio 100 % of the time. Only the wheel controls are going out on me.

My '88 GTA did basically the same thing. I took the steering wheel off and underneath the lock plate, mounted on the turn signal switch (the big white plastic thing that clicks back and forth when you flip the turn signals) are the controls that connect with the cancelling cam assembly (big yellow plastic piece).

Notice the grooves around the perimeter (if I remember correctly, there are 4) on the back side of the "big yellow thing". These grooves correspond with either 3 or 4 "pegs" that rise out of the cancelling cam assembly. These pegs (which are spring loaded to make them stand up) are what get (and transfer) the signals from the steering wheel controls.

In my case, the "peg" that carried current to the steering wheel controls had "sunk down" and wasn't making contact with its corresponding groove on the back of the "big yellow thing" (cancelling cam assembly). After dropping my steering column down and disconnecting wires at the base of the column, I had enough room and slack to slide the turn signal switch out enough to carefully remove the radio controls wiring assembly.

After carefully taking the "peg" assembly apart (and I do mean carefully), I found that the very, very small spring that held the "peg" up had burned or melted into pieces.

I searched for another replacement spring and ended up using one from a door lock. It held the "peg" up fine and after I put it back together the radio controls worked fine.

For a little while.

Took the steering column back apart and down to where I could see the "pegs" and sure enough, the one "peg" had dropped back down.

Said to %@## with it, put it back together and decided to get a new stereo unit anyway.

Hope this helps.
