Not 3rd gen..but

I have an 89 Bonneville SSE w/the good radio(supposedly)--has the seperate gain control--like some T/A's had--everything is stock--when some bass hits it starts to crackle. I tried to replace the stock 6x9's in the rear--no biggie right? I pull the speakers and see 2 leads(for wires)on each side--so there's 2 positives and 2 negatives(leads)--pos goes into the other pos--and same w/the neg. These leads go into a 4 prong plug-which then goes into a tweeter--now--when I wired the aftermarket speaker using only 2 leads(1 pos and 1 neg)--it sounded garbled and only bass was coming out--tweeter worked fine--just for giggles I attached another 6x9 using the other 2 leads--so everything was wired in paralell(sp?)--they sounded awesome!! but I don't have room--or even want-- 4 6x9's! Does anyone have any suggestions? Other then ripping out the factory wiring. Sorry so long--but I need the good clear tunes!

im just guessing, but are there seperate amps on each speaker??? Or did you try combining the 2 + and 2 _ together and see what happens???? Lemme know.

No amps on the speakers--or in the car--I put both pos and neg leads together from the speaker--each rear speaker has a total of 4 leads on it.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!! The sounds is terrible when it's loud!

Hm. I'm guessing that there's a crossover somewhere. Meaning, only treble is allowed to get to the tweeter, and only bass to the woofer. No matter which wires you hook your new speaker to, it isn't going to sound anywhere near right.

I'm not too familiar with that car, but that outboard gain control has to go to some sort of amp, I'd think. And the tweeters probably just run right off the radio.

At worst, you could keep the original tweeters, and use your new speakers as "subwoofers," but there must be a better solution. Maybe you can find a full-range signal in the wiring between the radio and the gain control.

I think I saw some kind of inline crossover type deal. There's defintely not a factory amp in the car. Think it might just be easier to rip out all that wiring and start from scratch?
how would I go about finding a full range signal inline?
Thanks for the advice.

You really can't use the factory wiring as-is. The easiest thing to do would be trace the lines back to the crossover, and splice the input directly to one of the wires coming off the output..

Or, you could toss the 6x9s you just got in favor of some bi-ampable ones.

I think there's crossovers in the wiring going to the tweeters.
Other then those there's nothing else there.
How does that input-output splicing work? I'll probably try that--unless that's what I did(explained in my 1st post).
How do those biampable speakers work?

Its pretty easy to take the crossover out of the circuit..

Find the crossover, disconnect the wires off each end, connect the input wire to one of the output wires..

Basicly, turn what you have now:

2 Outputs ===========[]--------------------- Input

To This:

--------------------------------------------

!!edit!!
Made a better ASCII Diagram for ya, but the board auto-formated it so it wouldn't work...

OK--I pulled one of the 6x9's out--and on the magnet it says 10/4 ohms--does that mean anything? Will it help me find the right aftermarket speaker? I just tried to wire in another set of aftermarket 6x9's that had the 4 outputs on it--w/o success!

to really get good sound, you should get a new head unit. Alpines are nice and have the best usable features IMOP, the pioneer deh-3300,3400....ect good stereos too, for less $$. the cross over is probably in the dash. I would just run new wires,it's not worth taking a chance with the stock wires unless you really know where they all are. it sounds like it's a decent factory component sytem, like the one in my 3KGT couldn't turn it up too loud, but it sounded good enough at half volume and the car wasn't too loud either... gut it all out,go aftermarket, and don't buy cheap stuff. I would recomend an Alpine head unit and eclipes speakers, just to name off a couple. it's all what you personally feel sounds the best, but there is a certain line of quality in audio equipment,no one should tolerate anything that falls below that line.

I have an Alpine in my GN--very good unit--but I was trying to keep the stock radio in my Bonne--Other then the speakers-I've been very happy w/it. I just might rip everything out and start from scratch--geez-I've got everything already! What would be the best/cheapest way to hook up tweeters off the 6x9's? Kind of how they are right now. I want everything to look stock-and the 6x9's in the rear deck have this box w/the grills on them--has spots for the 6x9 and tweeter--I want to keep it there. Could I just jump the tweeters off of the 6x9's?
Thanks for any help.
