Rear Speaker Size

Found out today my rear speakers are not 6x9. There was a long plastic box with a small round and a small oval speaker mounted in it. There was no crossover. Each speaker had its own power wire. The plastic enclosure was not reusable for the new 6x9's. I had to cut away metal to make them fit and mounted them in fiber board cutouts I made. How common was this speaker system? I don't often browse the audio boards and haven't seen it mentioned. The car did come with a "performance sound" system that included a bass boost slide control.

I don't know. Sounds to me like a Bose type of setup. Each speaker has it's on individual amp and they look kinda funky.
