Back to the subject yes 1k is enough to buy a nice setup. I got two 12's JL Audio W3's a custom speaker box and an 1200watt Audiobahn all for about 1k. I bought all of it new and had it custom installed.
Now for choosing your system I wouldn't ask on advice. Everyone has their own opinion on what sounds good. That's for you to decide. Just go to a reputable stereo shop and listen to the selection(don't forget to bring your favorite cd). Tell them what you want, if they are good they should be able to help you out. If they are idiots they will try to sell you the most expensive thing.

I sold alpine for 2 years and never once did I sell one of their subs or amps. Just decks and coax.
Anyway, $1k gets you some nice stuff. I'd say that you'll want to divide that into approximately a 60/40 split or maybe 70/30, with the bulk of your budget going to the amp. People make the mistake of buying good subs and then have to settle for a cheap amp. The amp is more important than the subs. There are plenty of inexpensive subs that sound good and can get real loud with enough power, but without proper power, nothing gets loud.

I didn't mean that Alpine was poor Quality, just a bit over priced for performance. You can get amps and subs with better spec's for a cheaper price. I don't like large amounts of small amps because I just don't see the point. Plus when you have crazy setups like that you are adding a lot of weight to an already heavy performance car.
The subs I can't comment on to much I haven't heard them just looked at prices and specs and they didn't seem all that empressive.
Kind of off the subject but my cousin just bought a el cheapo amp from Radio Shack I think it's an Audiovox 400watt. Well I help him hook it up to his Punch15 DVC and much to my suprise it sounded GOOD. So I guess you never know until you hear it.

I dont know... I bought an alpine amp a while back, i think its the V12 MRV-F307 (?) its a rear speakers/ fronts amp, and it runs my sisters Kicker comps damn good. The subs are 8ohm and are bridged in parallel running at 4ohm. the output is 80 WRMSx2 at 12.0 volts (car off) and 120 WRMSx2 at 14.4 volts, (car on) it beat the unholyshi+ out of her old pioneere premere amp that was doing 120 WRMSx2. the premere amp had the gain all the way up and was a good amount of bass. if you turn the alpine up all the way, it over powers the rest of the system. (if all the deck settings are the same.) sound quality is immensly better and it just plain pounds. i am a firm believer of alpine amps. at least V12s.

I'd get a pair of JL 12W6's and a Rockford Fosgate 500a2 or a 1000a1.
In my 86 T/A I have an Alpine CDA-7832 cd deck, Alpine CHA-1204 12 Disc Changer, Alpine 4 channel amp, Rockford Fosgate 225.2(same as the 500a2, just a little older), one JL 12W6 in a sealed box, and Polk Audio 4x6 and 6x9's.
I don't do a lot of bass'ing in my car, I just like the fullness that the sub adds.
I just like to have a system that can play at decent levels and be crystal clear with no distortion and that is what I have now with my system.
