I never got any real bass out my rear 6x9's.. I'm getting a bit now with my new radio (internal crossover & bass boost for rear external amp), but I have the Pioneer 6x9 3-ways. They'd probably sound much better in a sealed enclosure instead of in my sail panels... but I don't care much, I have subs. I bought them a few years ago, I think I paid $100 for 'em.

Boston Acoustics off Rockford punch 100 since 1997. Sounds great to this day. Also the graphic Pioneer EQ helped out tremendously. I have good bass response too, not as much as a sub of course, like the old JL 10w6, but still good enough for me.

i have Polk DB mounted on medium density fiberboard and before I got subs, they sounded incredible with all around sound. The subs I got just made them come alive though

I have Infinity Kappa's and there is incredible definition in the music, I can hear things in the music that I couldn't hear before.

I got two bose 6x9s out of a caddy in a junkyard, probably not the bast, but a whole lot better than the stock speakers, better sound quality and they are alot louder too.
