Um... No specific suggestions come to mind. Ask me a specific question and I'll be happy to try and answer it.

Any configuration that you prefer. In terms of sound, it's not going to matter much if the sub is facing up, or back, sideways or whatever. This is where you get to employ a little creativity. I'd say that you should measure the area and draw the dimensions in a couple 3D models. This will give you a wholesale idea of what working space you have, then just start placing drivers here, amps there, etc. until you get something you like.

Well, in actuality, if you face your subs toward you, you hear more distortion than you would if they were facing away from you. They also bump harder and deeper if they face away from you. I built a box for my friend with a '91 RS and he wanted to have them facing him on the rear deck,(over the gas tank). They sounded like poop. So I broke down the box, and built it into the rear well, and 'viola'! So if you plan on building your own box, use the hatch to your advantage.

Where do you come up with this? Facing the subs back doesn't "fix" a distorted waveform. Distortion is distortion no matter what way you face it. The ONLY thing it may mask are some upper frequency harmonics, but only at frequencies beyond any harmonics that the sub would be producing. The only way to filter out upper harmonic distortion is with a bandpass box, but that opens up another entire set of issues.

Having the subs up on the rear deck lowers output more because of the location than the direction the subs are facing. If you turned them around and faced them back, you'd find a small increase, but not much. The big advantage comes from moving them to the back.

But, changing their orientation does have some unpredictable effects sometimes, so it's always worth it to experiment.
