Shop around at both the Circuit City type places and the custom audio shops.

If you are looking for a BASIC setup you will probably get a better deal at the chain-stores. Sometimes they offer free installation.

Also, ask around to see if anybody else liked or had any problems with their installations. Some of the goobers at places like C-C have NO business messing with car electronics.

well you can get an aiwa 50x4 stereo at circuit city for 140.00 buck and it looks damn good, i know what you gonna say "aiwa!?" but trust its a good stereo, it changes color form red to blue, i was going ot buy it but my girls cousin bought it first a$$, if you dotn wana go aiwa you can get the kenwwod 45x4 witht he mosfet chip for about 140.00-160.00 and htta oens i pretty tight, they both come with a free installaton but the way the gip you is you have to pay for the dash adaptor, only 89 and up need the antana adaptor i think, may cra is an 87 and it didn't require the antana adaptor, for the dash adaptor it would be like 15 bucks.

by everything I'm assuming he ripped the speakers out too... As with everything, it all depends on how much you want to spend. You can get a good CD player for around $150-$200, if you want an MP3/CD player your looking closer to $300-$350. Speakers are usually around $70-$100 a pair for the low end ones. Don't let "low end" trick you into thinking they're **** though, they're a hell of a lot better than stock, just nothing compared to the top of the line aftermarket ones.

I'm not sure about speaker installations, but I'm pretty sure Circuit City (and possibly best buy) offer free installation of head units if you spend more than $50. So figure for around $400-$500 depending on installation costs, you can get away w/ 4 better than stock speakers and a pretty good head unit.

Also, a lot of the time Circuit City & Best Buy will have open box stuff (read: lots cheaper than brand new). I haven't yet had a problem with any of their open box head units, I'm not sure if I would trust open box speakers.

You can get a low end and midrange stuff at the chain stores, for really high end stuff you're best bet is a custom shop. Like I said, you can spend as much, or as little as you want, but $400-$500 is probably the minimum if you've got no stereo at all.

What I've got in my car right now is worth $525, but I've spent $1275 on my system. Unfortunately I had a $300 head unit and $450 in subs/amps stolen a while back.

hey i dunno if this will help but this is what i did. well my mom got this for me as a little present but anyway. she got me a real cheapo stereo. its a rampage cd/am/fm stereo. i installed it in about an hour and it sounds great and the cd player works fine no probs. and she got it from kmart for 65-70 bucks and that was it and now i have tunes in my car instead of just listenin to the exuast. so if u need something fast to put in and buy look for one of them. they got different models so i cant say which one to buy but hey at least u will have tunes until u really upgrade ur stereo and whatnot. so like theres my opionin for a cheap stereo.

I saw a pioneer unit with two 3 and a half inch speakers at walmart the other day for $129. If I really needed something I would get that!
