I was listening to some of the JL 6 1/2" comps. and they sounded really nice. The midbass was very clear and tight and the highs were good too. I was wondering if any of you guys ever used/listened to those components? If so gimme your opinions. Thanks

I have heard these and they are very good, just remember that they sound different on a board than they do in a car. Here's a few things to listen for when you audition component speakers. First, listen for a smooth and accurate midrange. Midrange tones are the most important, since human hearing is most sensitive in these frequency ranges. J. Gordon Holt, founder of Stereophile magazine once said, "If the midrange isn't right, nothing else matters." All too true. Pay close attention to how the tweeters sound. If they seem harsh or too bright, they will be worse when installed in a vehicle. The whole presentation of the midbass drivers and tweeters is important—neither component should draw attention to itself. The closer you come to hearing one component, rather than a woofer and tweeter, the better. Problems here are usually due to the crossover, and will be more evident when the system is installed.

Listen to music you like, and intend to listen to on your system. Ask the sales person to audition the speakers without subs, and then with subs that are close to the kind you have. Lots of installers take advantage of the discounts they get from equipment reps, so it might be possible for you to actually hear the product in a car—if you can, do it.

I know this sounds like a lot of work, but you have to listen to the things, and they might as well be good and worth the money you spend. Next upgrade those amps, you will be surprised at how those speakers will sing:-)
