JL 12W3 -or- Alpine Type R 12

Hummm.... I have been debating this for awhile. I listened to the JL and I like it alot but I can't find a place anywhere that sells Alpines. I was wondering what has a heavy punch and still has good SQ. I was leaning towards the JL but I see the Alpines are about $130 and the JL is $200 or more. I was going to buy one driver but then I was thinking if the Alpine had better SQ then I would get 2 of them. Tell me what guys think. Thanks. -TMM

I strongly recommend the Alpine Type R 12's! I used them for comp and feel that there is not a sub that compares with them for sound quality and power handling for the money! I also think that they sound better than the Punch Powers and the JL 12w6's that I have run previously.

If that is not convicing enough, I hit 143.6db with the Alpines running two Punch 500a2 amps and 4 of the Alpine Type R's at comp last summer.

I think it depends on many things especially personal preferances. If you like alot of bass then having 2-subs is going to be better because you have more cone area which = higher SPL. IMO the Alpines are more "boomy" to where the JL's are tighter sounding. So it's really power, money, and preferance thing. Me I'd go JL for my tastes.

I liked the Alpines because they are rated very highly along with JL's. I also like the Alpines because they take very little internal volume. I think it is around .7-1.0 cu. ft. for the 12". I heard that the Type-R's were good SQ subs with a little bump. Thanks for the input guys.

Hey nagga, check your facts, and get your db's checked at a sanctioned iasca dealer. go to www.dbdragracing.com, check out event finalists and db readings and you will see that your buddy is more than likely not telling you the truth. There is almost no way to reach over 125 with the speaker cone mass of 2 tens, it is almost an impossibility. If he had some real competition performance subs, I would say I would almost believe it, but not lightning audio, and gaurantee he did not with an orion amp.

The address below is from comp last year, you will see that most are in the 140's, and these are not your $300 systems, these are thousand dollar and more set-ups. So please understand nagga that I am not trying to dispute the fact that your friend told you what he hit, just that he is not giving it to you straight.

That link does not seem to be working, so if you go to the first one, go to competitors menu, than event results, it doesn't really matter where you get the results from as they are all about the same for readings.

one of my buddies at work has two of the 12" alpines being pushed by an xtant amp in his eclipse, and when he cranks it you almost cant sit inside from the pressure! I love those subs

I am planning on getting some Infinity Kappa plates for the front to give me really good highs. I think i am going to go with 2 Type-R 12" DVC's. I am hoping that they are going to be really sound good and pound when i need them too.

The worst of the rattling I noticed in my Camaro was from the license plate frame and then from the deck lid. The license plate frame they sell a seal for that keeps it from ratttling against your car. The deck lid is a little more difficult to take care of. I also dynamated my whole rear end and undercoated it as well, seemed to do a real nice job of taking care of the rattles.
