Distributor is wasted - getting rid of computer
Well, the distributor in my 86SC is wasted and I'm going to get rid of the computer controlled stuff once and for all. What parts will I need for this swap? Also, any recommendation on parts would be appreciated. In the ~$500 range... Thanks in advance.

Yea the convertor lockup is a prob but you should be able to manage everthing well under 500$
you need a non cc qjet, non cc distributor and your set. To get rid of the check engine light find the grey with black stripe wire on the computer and ground it. Easy stuff but it might just be better to get a replacement CC distributor and leave the computer intact.
a good accle distrubutor can cost 130-200 bucks and the carb qjets are 150$remand but you might as well get a holley 600cfm or edelcrap 600cfm 219.99 wieand action+ or edelcrap performer 120$

as far as distributor... you need a vacuum advance distributor. i got one used for $30 at a junkyard but spent @ $100 to replace everything. jegs has a complete one for @$130. if its a carbureted motor (coming out and going in) i think that the only other part you have to have would be the lock up torque convertor switch.
I done this twice now, what you need to do is find a vacuum advance distributor and normal carb of your preference. A standard HEI distributor will work fine. If it's a manual trans, take apart the wiring harness that comes out of the passenger side fender at the firewall. Find the blue and green wires. Seperate those from the others. Cut everything else and discard. Now the two wire you kept go to the back-up light switch inside the tranny. Your going to need to re-wire that set to work with out the computer (which means your going to cut these too), I'd tell you how but I've been too lazy to do it on mine so I haven't figured that out. If it's an auto your going to need to find the back-up light wires, I'd bet they are the same color and in the same place, but I'm not sure. You will also need a lockup kit for the auto trans and a stand alone fan circut. I bought my circut/relay/sensor kit from schucks for $35 and had it installed in under 30 min. You can run an aftermarket 2 guage kit for the water temp and oil pressure or rewire your stock cluster to work your choice. The previous owner of my 86 had already put in aftermarket guages so I left the stock ones alone.
If your wondering, all of the non computer wires, except for the backup lights, go down the left side. That means the tach, volt guage, fuel guage, starting system, charging system, and eveything else will still work.
If you have any more questions feel free to ask.
