CC q-jet & EGR on L69

does the engine rely on the EGR to help correctly regulate air/fuel ratio and combustion temp in the chambers? or can this be closed off with no effect on performance?
in other words: what's better for a mild stock CC q-jet engine, properly functioning EGR or closed-off EGR? I've heard many different stories on this, but nothing to clear this up for me yet, thanks

Functioning. The ignition curve is tailored to account for the EGR lowering the combustion temp. If the valve isn't functioning, the engine will ping.

I agree with that. The EGR valve doesn't affect the A/F ratio by much but it is necessary unless you get a chip burned with less part-throttle ignition advance.

it is impossible too find the right egr ( at advance auto anyways) I mounted the cover plate between the egr and intake and it seems to be running fine now. it revs right up to red line and doesn't ping. I should set the timing now,but it does seem to be running fine the way it is.

I have a similar dilemma. Are you saying you used a blockoff plate on the EGR flange and then mounted the actual EGR valve over it? I am just trying to get this straight so I don't have to shell out buku dinero for a custom chip.

i have the performer non-egr intake on mine and haven't noticed any engine pinging. The idle is real crappy right now, but i'm pretty sure that my choke is kinda messed. Actaully i noticed how much crap the EGR system leaves in the intake and i was glad to get rid of it. Is it really that neccessary to get a custom burned chip? This would be the first i've heard of it. BTW i'm still using the c/c carb and dist.

The only reason I said anything about a chip was that I read somewhere on here that the computer determines how much ignition timing to use depending on readings from the EGR. I was told that to delete the EGR required a custom chip to add less(?) part throttle timing. If nobody has pinging, thats all I need to hear.

I'm another C/C Carb and Dist casulty. Main problem I had before the fire was that I couldn't get the car to start with the computer hooked up to the carb. Anyone think a L69 H.O. engine ECM would work better than a LG4 ECM? I have one of each and I'm currently using the LG4 ECM.
Forgot to mention that I'm running all the emissions equip.
