holly carb

Hey, Where I work there is a guy that has a rebuilt holly carb. He said it was a 650 or a 700. He said for $100 he would sell it and put it on. Is this a good deal for a rebuilt? He is a mechanic, a very good mechanic. And me, well, I'm only 16 so I dont know how to rebuild a carb.

I have a stock 305 with 123,000 miles and a edlebrock performer intake and a holly 600. the holly is crap, it leaks and the 4bbl doesn't work. The engine runs strong.

He knows what size. He rebuilt it about a month ago and he didn't have it with him. He had to go home a see what size it was. He works with me at a place called precision automotive, and He is the best mechanic there. It's not a rinky-dink place it's a big operation. We do drag cars and monster trucks and all kinds of expensive and high performance stuff. He knows what he is doing and I trust him in his work. And if anything goes wrong he will fix it free of charge. I think I'm going to have him put it on. It sounds like a good deal to me. What do you guys think?

It sounds like you've already made your mind up - but I agree with you. Since he'll help you tune it and fix problems down the road it's probably worth it. I'd have to see the carb and know how old/worn it is (even though it's rebuilt) for me to buy it for $100 BUT for your $ you are getting more than just the carb.

I bought 2 Holleys for $23 from a mechanic I worked with, rebuilt one of them with a $14 kit and used that carb for 3 years (other small parts were added for more $). However, I did spend many hours fiddling with the float level, idle mixture screws, vacuum secondary springs etc to get it right - so time was involved also. Be sure you are watching carefully as he installs/tunes the carb so you can learn - also get a Holley book.

Learning how to tune and daily drive a Holley equipped car is fun experience - but not without it's trials and tribulations!

You have already convinced yourself he is a great mechanic so you have answered your own question.
