ok I tried starting my rebuilt engine today (q-jet) and I also had the carb rebuilt at the "carb shop" anyway... It starts for about 5 or 10sec then dies. One thing I noticed is a plume of white vapor shooting from the carb once and awhile. What would cause this? could this be part of my problem? I also think I may have a problem with the alternator (gets super hot in just a few seconds)... too many new things at once. argh...

 

sounds out of time...if its backfiring through carb. possibly distributor is 180 out? make sure you have TDC on compression stroke...
