My carb. bogs down!

I've got an '86 Firebird with a stock 4 bbl. carb. Everything is stock on the motor and it has around 90,000 miles. My problem is this. 99% of the time when I go to get on my car, from a dead stop or barely moving, it bogs down bad! (And on several occasions it's actually died.) It's only when I'm stopped or barely moving. Typically under 1000 RPM's. What's the deal? My friend said it could be the accelerator pump(is that the right term?) and he said if that's the case, then I'd be better off just going to get new carb. (because he claims they're hard to come by and a pain in the @$$ to replace, because it usually involves doing a rebuild). Can anyone help? Thanks in advance.

I would say buy a rebuild kit and carb floats (don't come in rebuild kits) and rebuild the carb... it will take a couple of days so it's a weekend project... the first day you should take the major components apart and give them a good soaking in carb cleaner in a metal pan (about $15 for a half gallon). You then put it all together with the new gaskets and stuff in the rebuild kit... A little patience and careful work and you should be all set... the whole project should cost you less than 50 bucks...

BTW, Quadrajets practically grow on trees... one of the most widespread carbs ever used and you can use just about any carb off of 1976 + camaros and firebirds in thirdgens...

You might want to pick up a "new" accel pump at a junk yard if thats broken... $5

Good luck, sounds like a nice ride!

That's what I was afraid of. Aren't rebuild kind of difficult due to the small needles and such? I'm not driving my car much right now, due to it also over heating. So I might as well rebuild the carb. Since it is just sitting there waiting for the mechanic to call and tell me they have an opening. I'll probably just end up fixing that myself also. (To bad I'm mechanically DEclined!) Thanks for your help!
