Holley parts question

Please anyone that can help even a little, please respond. I need to tinker with the Holley on the engine I have now. I know there are like 900 books on Holleys, but I don't have time to read them before I get this started. I have listed the main parts below, and what I think they do. If I am wrong, please correct me.

Jets===regulates the amount of fuel into ?????
Accelerator Pump===Pumps fuel to the squirters, and then into the intake.
Squirters===regulates how the fuel is sprayed into the venturi. Small has more pressure, Big has less, but pumps more fuel.
Power valve===Lets more fuel enter the engine based on vacuum.
Pump Cam===regulates how fast, and how aggressive the acc. pump works.

Please, please, please, if anyone can help please do. I know it will take a while to get this car dialed in, but it is running wayyyyyyy to rich. I promise to read the book "Holley Tips and Tricks" as soon as I find time, or whenever I run into a problem after I start on this, which ever is first.

Thanks,

Jets===regulates the amount of fuel into?

Only during acceleration when the throttle blades are open. There is a seperate system that controls idle and cruise.

Accelerator Pump===Pumps fuel to the squirters, and then into the intake.

yup

Squirters===regulates how the fuel is sprayed into the venturi. Small has more pressure, Big has less, but pumps more fuel.

All pump the same amount of fuel, based on the volume of the accelerator pump (30 or 50cc..probaly 30). Smaller ones deliver less at a time, over a longer time. This is only for transition while opening the throttle.

Power valve===Lets more fuel enter the engine based on vacuum.

Yes..but more to the point only under havey load when vacuum falls below a certain point. In normal everyday driving conditions it should never open. It's also a prime suspect when running rich under all driving conditions..they blow fairly easy.

Pump Cam===regulates how fast, and how aggressive the acc. pump works.

Yup, and they also influence how much of the 30 or 50 cc actually gets pumped. Every engine will like a particular pump profile..experimentation is required.

Start with lower-numbered jets if it runs rich cruising. If it's really really rich, get some that are 4 sizes smaller, then another set 2 sizes smaller. That should get you close. If it's rich idling, start by checking your idle vacuum; then put in a power valve that's ½ of that, or 6 inches less, whichever is the higher number; but no higher than a 8.5. So if your idle vacuum is 12, half of that is 6.0; or since you can't get that valve, put in a 5.5. Check the float level before you do anything else.

Thanks guys. I believe my problem lies in the jetting. I was at a stop light and stomped the gas only to see a big cloud of black smoke roll in front of me. I opened it up going up a hill with a guy from work behind me, and he said it was all black. If I remember right I have 69/74 in now. I will try something a little smaller.

Thanks again,
