aftermarket carb-Demon?
aftermarket carb-Demon?
i wanna ditch the cc carb and dist. i've heard wonders about demons, and found that teh 625 road demon isn't too expensive and has a choke. some questions i've got: how hard to tune? do the jets interchange with holley jets? if not, where does one get them and how expensive are they? Would i be better off with a different carb? i'd like to hear everyones opinions.

Easy to tune,no different than a Holley. All of the service parts (jets, power valves, squirters, etc) interchange with Holley. So wherever you can get Holley parts you can use them on the Demon.Have a friend with the Road Demon..nice carb.I run a 750 Speed Demon on my Z and love it.I would recommend it,IMO

IN my opinion a Holley carburator is the way to go. If tuned correctly you will be very happy with the perfomance. Also around my area everybody deals with Holleys and availability for any demon part would not be plenty.

the only holley experience i have is with the two that my dad had on an olds 455- the family car. I believe that they both were 650 smog legal- not quite sure the first started on fire and was replaced with another. This car started horribly in cold weather, ran bad if it was too hot or too cold, but when it was juuuuussssst the right temp ran fine. Do all holleys have these bad traits? this is my great fear.

It's a matter of tuning and adjustment. But, an automatic choke does wonders for the problem you describe. Even a manual choke, for that matter.
Long, long time ago, I had a 650 DP on an over-sexed 302 in my '57. It had no choke (guy who built the engine had this thing about maximizing airflow). I was stationed at Fort Carson near Colorado Springs, arriving in November - I'd give it two full pumps, nurse the throttle for a minute after it fired, then drive away. This worked even at -5 degrees F (after I replaced the battery, that is). It was tuned at 1500' altitude, by the way - probably helped it run cold at 6035' Fort Carson.
A choke would have done wonders. Maybe even rejetting, but I didn't know much in those days...
