Holley 650 DP, float problems w/in

Here's the deal. Im going down the road, speedlimit's 55, my 700r4 isn't kicking into OD so Im at like 3k the whole way. After about a minute of that, the car starts sputtering and stumbling unless I keep it at 3k. An intersection comes up so I let off the gas to make the turn and check out what's wrong and the car just dies. I get out, take off the aircleaner and fuels just blowing out of the primary fuel bowl vent. So, I removed the needle and seat and set it back in farther down than it was, but when I turned the fuel pump on it just shot gas out again. Somehow, after removing it and putting it way back down again, I hooked up the fuel pump and it held.

It was set so when you just shake the car or bump it a little gas comes out of the sight hole. Now it's the same and I made it back home.

So what could cause it to do that?

Thanks,

Scott

Not sure if it's a c or s model. Know what the difference is offhand?

Oh, and being pissed at this same carb on my last iroc, I kneed the passenger side fender when it broke down on me, and everybody seemed to ask about how that huge dent on the front of my car

At least I'm not the only one this stuff happens too

Its a 4777c. Looking in the jegs at the carb's, the only differnce I see is that the 4777s is zinc coated and 10 bucks more.

That's all too typical of Holley carbs. Every product seems to have one or 2 weaknesses to go along with its strengths; that failure mode definitely doesn't count among the strengths of Holleys.

Their needle valves are more sensitive to particles of dirt than most other carbs are. It doesn't take much to get stuck in there and keep the float from closing. Often, by the time you get the car off the middle of the road or wherever, and take the carb apart, the piece of dirt will get disturbed, and you'll never even get to see it.

Keep a good fuel filter installed; that will help. I learned to always keep a spare set of bowl gaskets and a screwdriver in the car, along with a power valve, a rotor for my HEI, a can of oil, one of brake fluid, etc.... just part of the roadside trouble kit. After you get comfortable taking it apart and putting it back together, it becomes little more than an occasional annoyance.

the diffrence i realized with 4777c and s is better gas millage and the secondarys dont drip gas on idle like the c does. im more happy with the s then the c. if u can take it back or exchange it id do it in a heartbeat

My gas mileage is horrible. Somewhere around 6-7mpg. The non-lockup converter just kills me, takes a lot more gas to get it going then it did when it was a stick. When I had the t5 I got about 11mpg. But these carbs... I just took it apart and put in the nylon float s and better needle and seats from my other holley, new gaskets and the bastard took me an hour of putting it on and taking it back off to get it to stop leaking. Im definatly ditching it for something more reliable, just gotta figure out what now.
And to RB83, I do carry all the tools I need to work on the carb at all times, I always have spare gaskets and parts also, but you have to know that's some BS. There should be no reason to have to worry about your carb giving u fit's and having to pull over on the road to fix it (which happens a lot for myself) It's BS that I have to get out of my car on my way to work, get full of gas and grease, just so i can make it in. If it wasn't for the carb, my car would be a daily driver withought a problem. And it's not just the floats, im worried about coming to a light and the car stalling unless I put it in neutral because the idle's always changing up and down for some reason.

I can't wait to get another carb so I can take a bat to this damn holley
