Carb Problems

About a week ago, I was driving my car and I gave it a little rev and it went nuts. It went at WOT(Wide open throttle) and would not stop. The pedal was all the way up so I am pretty sure it isn't the throttle. Well I killed it and when I tried to restart it went back up to redlineing. Well I just went out there and played with the automatic choke a little. I pulled it towards me and pushed it away. Is it suppossed to be really loose??? It was very very loose. Then I pulled the throttle the spring looked good and it went back to place. Then I started it and it ran fine. I took it out for a drive, drove fine for about two hours. Then I put it in nuetral and gave it a rev, and it happened again. I really need to find out what the problem is, any ideas???

Hmm. Is this a cc Quadrajet car? There is a little compensator that kicks in when you turn on the A/C. If it triggers without the extra load of the A/C on, it can cause the car to go into WOT. A quick fix is to disconnect it. Look for a single wire going to a cylinder that has a small bolt-like object coming from it. The throttle linkage should rest on it when the car is off. Disconnect his wire, and that might fix it. However, seeing as how a car with uncontrollable WOT is hardly the safest thing to drive, I'd run it straight to a repair shop after pulling the wire. For more details, look up the "Easy A/C Removal" thread in the archives, specifically Kevin Vandevenne's message.
