TBI to Carb

I have a 88 camaro 305 TBI 700r4 tranny. I want to change it to a Edelbrock intake and Edelbrock 4BBL and headers. Can I still use the computer and distributor that is presently in the car and just leave the wires for the TBI disconnected.OR do I have to get a new distributor. If so what would be best kind. All the emmissions have already been disconnected

The CC-distributor will not provide adequate timing advance without the signal from the TPS. It would run, just not well. Most any vacuum/mechanical distributor will work. The HEI knock-offs are typically pretty decent. Summit has a "house brand" they sell for a reasonable price. I have a new ZZ3 crate engine take-off in the '57 that I picked up for even less.

Are you dead set on the Edelbrock products? Wieand manifold and Road Demon carb would be a superior combo (although more expensive, of course).

Two other details: Without the computer, your torque converter clutch will no longer lock up. Get a kit to perform that function. Also, the TV cable will not work properly with the throttle arm on the new carb. Check with Summit for the correction for that (there was an article in a recent magazine, CHP I think, possibly Pop Hot Rod, on this topic).

your current distributor will not work at all(repeat_NOT AT ALL). your best bet for a distributor is to either buy a used HEI and rebuild it or get a msd or mallory.

been there

i have a 91 RS and i just went from tbi to carb i put a weiand intake and eddlebrock carb on it. the only thing i had to do was get a distributor with a mecanical advance i got one off of a 84 blazer. then your going to need a good fuel presure regulator with a fuel return line port. i got mine from summit the best one to use is the marolry it's cheap and has the return line. thats all you will have to do. just run a hot wire for the distributor.

you will also have to get a braket that goes on the back of the carb for your automatic kick down and throttle i got mine at Orileys auto parts

We already told you why. The timing advance comes from the computer. Without the input from the throttle position sensor, the computer will go brain-dead, and will not advance the ignition properly. Power and economy will suffer greatly.
