Carburetor help
Carburetor help
I recently bought a 1987 z28 camaro, has 305 V8, it sat in a yard for about 1 year with no one driving it at all on an empty tank of gas. I did a full tune up on it.
If I floor it from the line, it seems a lil hesitant but then flies, shifts into 2nd gear and then feels like the car is holding back even if the pedal is to the metal and then a couple seconds later it seems to catch and then fly through. It sometimes happens with 2rd gear also but not as bad. One mechanic said I need to replace the fuel pump(I think thats what it is called) in my 4 barrel Rochester Carburetor. It seems like that couuld be the problem. I was also thinking that by this time the transmission could be bad for 2nd gear and sometimes 3rd.
Ah yes it is a 4 speed automatic Overdive transmission...
So I need help heh, I Don't know how to rebuild carburetors.
If anyone would know a site that had step by step description of rebuiling a carb that would be great.
Any Suggestions? Thanks in advance

Welcome aboard.
Nope, not the fuel pump. That's on the side of the engine (plus one in the gas tank on '87's).
He probably said "accelerator pump". That's in the carb. But, I don't think that's it, either, or you'd be complaining about hesitation anytime you pushed the throttle down a little more.
Check out the tech articles on this board. There's one on optimizing the q-jet (what our carbs are called - short for "quadrajet"). Most likely, you are experiencing a condition known as "bog", where more air gets into the engine right after going wide-open-throttle than the carb circuits can supply fuel to make a good combustible mixture. Adjusting the air valve tension (the tech article describes where it is and how to do it) will most likely solve the problem. You might also need to do a little mixture tuning by changing the rods & hanger, but I'd guess you'll see big improvement just by adjusting the AV tension.
