Backfiring on acceleration

Hello, I have a Quadrajet on an AMC 401, and when I stomp on the gas the carb backfires, then it runs fine. Also the 4 barrel doesn't open. Is there an easy solution? I don't know a whole lot about carbs. I also have another q-jet that I could use, but it has connectors for some sort of wires. Do you need these?

Thanks for your help in advance.
Jeff

Check your timing. I just fixed that problem on my Olds and it was 5* retarded.

When you say the secondaries aren't opening, are you referring to the actual throttle blades or the air valve? Also, Qjets have a secondary lockout attached to the choke mechanism (unless you've removed it)--are you checking them with the motor hot or cold?
