Base timing for a 83 camaro 305
My friend just installed a 83, 305 engine out of a camaro into his 86 GMC Jimmy. He has a high performance cam, intake and exhaust with a 4bbl 600cfm carb. He is wondering what his timing should be set at because right now it is backfiring.

Factory settings with the CC setup were between 0 and 6 degrees.
If he's using a non-CC vacuum/mechanical advance distributor, it's typically 8-12 degrees at idle with the vacuum advance disconnected. Total mechanical with vacuum disconnected should be around 36 degrees.
