So an 87 H.O. computer will work. So I will not have any sensor conflicts or anything.

Are you sure you need a l69 computer. I have a lg4 computer but it was the newer version than yours that had the knock sensor. Do you know if it will work with the chip?

Well, I looked at that and I guess it says that you had to have a 87+ computer. It said it could be lg4 or l69. I dont know what years these motors stoped but I thought it was 87 but a guy on that board mentioned an 88. How long did the monte's have the ccc's?

im pretty sure the cccarbs stopped in 88. when i went to the junk yard to get a computer from a 87 monte SS, the search came up with a 86 camaro, 87 monte ss, and a 88 caprice, and all the computers had the same numbers.

Could you give me that number. I could check it on my computer just to make sure before I go spending more money.

I did that and all of the vehicles it came up with were 87 and 88s but fattie92 even said that he found an 86 camaro and it had the same computer so I doubt thats all it came in unless the car was labeled wrong, or had the computer or engine swaped in the past. Is that the number to look for on my computer to see if it is the right one?

I dunno if their info is all correct or not, but then again neither is a junkyard's. 1228079 is the computer that came in the kit along with the chip, so we know that one works with it. If fattie92 has a different one, we can add that to the list too. EDIT: which chip are you trying to use? an L69 or a ZZ4?

LG4TA, the '87 computer will likely work, but i'm not sure about the L69 chip. It probably won't work right without a knock sensor, but i don't think it will throw any codes.

Actually lg4ta you still have a 305 right. If so you could just get an aftermarket chip for your car and use the same computer. Actually considering you dont have a knock sensor because you have a 83 I would stay with the same computer and get an aftermarket chip for it. The reason he got an l69 computer was because it was the one that the 350 computer controlled carb chips were designed for, but the knock sensor was disabled in the version he got. The dont have any chips for the 305s that have the knock sensor disabled for the newer computers. If you did get a l69 computer you would have to run the 350 h.o. chip otherwise it would expect the sensors from a l69 including the knock sensor. I dont know that the 350 chip would cause problems on a 305, but you would probably be better off to take the safe route and get the chip for the 83 lg4. Ok, now that I have repeated myself several times trying to explain my thinking I think I will stop rambling.

I have something to add to that. LG4TA: If you have a 305, don't even bother with the computer, there won't be much gain anyway without extensive mods. I doubt there will even be much gain on a 350, but I'm trying to fix a few kinks in my car's driveability. I see what you're talking about if it were a simple chip swap, but I think it is a little more complicated than that for your car because of the lack of a knock sensor, and it wouldn't be worth it if the computer you've got works just fine.

It is a simple chip swap if he gets like a hypertech chip for his car. It should help out because the lg4's timing curve is set to keep it from making as much power as the l69.

I was thinking more along the lines of $35 max for a brand new L69 chip, as opposed to $125+ for an aftermarket.

True, bud did they make l69s without knock sensors? If so he could probably use a chip for one of those.

dun dun dunnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn... yeah the track was HORRIBLE!!! my fastest time was a 15.9 with a shiiiiiiiiiiitty 2.5 60foot...that was only with 4 passes..i was gonna run later that night but my car didnt want to....(that cable from the gear selector to the transmission....the clip broke that held it to the tranny and i was stuck in 1st....) so i didnt get to duplicate or better my previous 15.6 run (still ****ty i should be at least 15.0)...

.

.

.

about the 350ho computer on the 305....id only do it if it was modded pretty good....or atleast a full exhaust. the computer will change your whole timing curve, and change air/fuel duing part throtle. but if i were you, i wouldnt waste my cash on it till you upgraded to a 350. i just upgraded casue im trying to track down a problem.

Fattie92, can you give me a brief description of what you did to your carb? Everyone keeps sending me to that article, and i have no idea what the hell its saying, so if you just tell me exactly what the hell i need to fiddle with it would make my life a hell of a lot easier.

I think I get the picture now since the 83 LG-4 doesn't have the knock sensor the L-69 Chip won't work. So does that mean that the 83 Z28 L-69 HO had knock sensors? I guess I will get an aftermarket chip. Are they getting any cheaper now since they have been out there for awhile. I figure fewer people are buying chips for 83-92 since everyone is ditching their computers and more hit the junk yards so you would think the demand would be lower and they could have a fire sale.

Thats what I am not sure of is whether the 83 l69 had a knock sensor or not. I know that the l69 got the knock sensor before the lg4s did. The lg4s got knock sensors in 85 so the at least the 84 l69 had one but I dont know bout the 83. Maybe someone else might know and be able to help out here.

The kit specifies that the chip with knock sensor is a replacement for 83-86 L69's, and i saw a post on the history board that stated an 83 has a knock sensor. Try PMing RB83L69, i'm sure he'd be able to give a definite answer. A JET chip runs about $160 or so, and i couldn't find anyone with a hypertech chip but they usually run about $125. Usually lower demand = higher price. As i said before, if you pay that much for an aftermarket chip, you'll be disappointed in the difference. If you've got $125 or so to burn and only want to do cheap and easy mods, try these: an Accel ignition control module, open element air cleaner, and better secondary metering rods and hanger.

To my knowlege all years of the L-69 in the 3rd gen had a knock sensor. Now if the electronics are compatible every single year I don't know.

85-87 LG-4s had a knock sensor as well, which corresponds nicely to the years that they had their compression bumped up from 8.5:1 to 9.5:1 (same as the L-69).

AFAIK, all 83-86 L69 and 85-87 LG4 motors used the same knock sensor. In fact, I believe there's only two types of knock sensors: one is 100kOhm and the other is 3.9kOhm. Each type is available in 305 and 350 flavors.

For thirdgens, the 3.9k is only used on Speed Density TPI cars. All other thirdgens used the 100k to my knowledge, regardless of induction system or year. I'm not 100% certain what knock sensor 90-92 TBI cars used; if I had to guess, i'd say the 100k sensor.

Glad to hear it. Sometime later you might try some CC's and see if they work even better. So how does it feel knowing that you really only needed to pay $0.60 to fix your problem?

pretty damn stupid/good! lol... well im not sure if it was the open element, or the Ck's... or both of them... but its fixed!! all i care about. and technicaly i spent 50.60 (K&N filter with edelbrock open element was a package deal off ebay) ... but its not a bad thing that i upgraded all that other stuff... i just dont have to worry about any of that for a long time now!

how them DR's worken for you?

Do you think there is much difference since it runs right now? By the way, what rear gears do you have now?

its gotta be a few tenths faster then it was, before it would stumble big time once at 4500, then after that it jsut didnt feel like it had much power.....but now it pulls hard to 6grand, no stumble at all. im pretty sure i have 3.23's out back....but im not positive. people keep tellin me "3.73's wont make a big differance".. ohh well! lol,, my gears are on the way out as it is(whinning), and im putting a posi in, so y not the 3.73's as well? im hoping for a 12.9 with the mods i got planned...but the thing that sucks is that im tryin to beat my friends integra that already runs 13.9's...and has ordered more stuff since then ....damn them fast economy cars!
