Carb or maybe igniton problem

Ok. Monday my car woudn't start. I thought it was a starter problem. and I didnt have the time to fix it. So I sent it up to my dads freind mechanic. He replaced the sires to the starter and shimmed it up and checkied it. He said it wasnt the starter but he didnt know what it was. This got me frustrated. He came back a few ours later and said it was the Carb. Since this is a 5 month old carb I was both sceptical and ennorvated.
The symptoms are It will start. It sounds like crap. IT wont idle well. It stalls if you try and give it gas . It stalls out and spits gas or a fireball from the carb.
Ive triple checked the firing order and I have inspected a couple plugs. They dont look to good but they dont look like they would be causing this.
The Carb thats on there now is a Edelbrock. 5 monthes old.. So I ordered a new Holley which will be here monday. And I guess Ill see what happens then. anyone have any ideas for me? ?
By the way its a 82 Trans Am with a Chevy 305 . Thanks in advance. (this is also on the Tech board.)
