'75-'80 Q-jets - Waste of time for performance use?
I've seen conflicting opinions. I'd really love to use the later carb, so that I can have the electric choke. However, there are some that say that the part throttle circuits are too lean on these emmisions carbs, and that you are better off w/ something from the '69-'70 period.
Anyone have the definitive answer? I have a '69, '70, and '79 carb, and I need to know which way to go. RB has told me to use the '69 carb (and I respect his opinion, as he has a great deal of experience), but I wanted to hear from the other "experts". Thanks.

They're the best carbs to use. Yes, the idle circuits are usually very lean but that's fixable with a simple drilling operation that anyone can do while rebuilding the carb.
For a how-to just send me an email and I'll send you back a Word document that tells exactly how to do this.

Thanks!
I have used a '78 carb in the past with great results on a mild application. However, I was wondering if I was "giving something up" when compared to an early carb.
Please mail the Word document. I think I know the idle drill mods you are talking about, but I'd love to see if I am missing something.
Are these carbs typically lean at cruise conditions? If that becomes a problem, how do you fix it?
