Think this kind of cowl induction would work?

Ok, being bored and having little engine knowledge, I tend to play with stuff that is easy to bolt on and has little chance of dropping something in the motor (long story). Heres what I tried before I went back to school. I took my stock LG4 air cleaner setup and placed my 4" element Ive got from the open element sitting on there now. I then placed the lid on it. The air cleaner is in my cowl, and the setup acts like a heat shield. Im thinking of putting that in, and getting rid of the lip in the center of the cleaner that makes the air quieter. I could rivet molding onto the air cleaner, and voila, functional cowl induction. IS this a good idea, or would it make little difference. I had it on the car for approx 30 minutes the other day, and it was quieter, which I dont like. But if it fed it cold air, I could deal with slightly less noise. But the other day the secondaries wouldnt open and not much noise came out of the open element either.

Any other ideas for a cowl induction setup are appreciated. This one seems the cheapest and simplest.

I think it would work with a bit of moding to your hood,,,like were you getting a cowl hood? If so do it or you could get a scoop fiberglassed on or suptin and just cut a circle in your stock hood and mount the scoop on top of it. Is this on a camaro or what? If you do it I would get a hiflo air filter,,,,,and find some trunk weather stipping from some car in a u-pic it junkyard,,,look for one that you could just push on (verticly) to the lip of your (stock) breather rim (ummm my toyota MR2 had it under the front compartment under the hood for a seal) then you may have to fab up something to make the stock breather walls come up higher to touch the hood. (put lots of white grease or sumtin on the rubbers to see it they touch the hood when you close it (the inprints will tell you if you have to adjust the height of your seal). Another thing is to get a flat filter cover (K&N Extreme) or supting so you can flo air straight down too,,I see them on modified stock cars all the time that run cowl hoods.

I have a 2 5/8" cowl on a stock firebird hood. Its on my t/a. There is a hole cut in the hood and the air cleaner currently goes up in it only about an inch. Im gonna try adding some molding to the stock LG4 thing. Only problem with the LG4 thing is the lip thing which I beleive is there to silence the air. I think Im going to try and remove that. If I mess it up, I dont need it and those air cleaners are a dime a dozen. Only thing I worry about is less coole air would get into my engine compartment than does now with the cowl, as it would be blocked off. When I get back, I will fab something up, and let everyone know how it turned out.
