In a nutshell, they are tapered rods that restrict the flow of
fuel through a jet. the further they are in the jet (less fuel);
the farther out, the more fuel.

If you want to have fun with your Q-jet, get Doug Roe's book
Rochester Carburators, and learn it.

metering Rods

I have an Edelbrock carb. What will I benifit from using metering rods?
I know that they are differant sizes but I don't understand what they do?
You said you put them in your carb jets to limit fuel?
Could you or someone please explane this more.

What will metering rods do for me?
I'm so confused....

You already have metering rods in your carb. The car needs more fuel at wide open throttle than it does at cruise. The metering rod takes up space in the hole of the jet and restricts how fast the fuel can go through it. When more gas is needed, the rod lifts up so that only the thinner tip is sticking through the jet and the fuel flow is restricted less.

You can find out all about your carb at http://www.edelbrock.com/automotive/eps_intro.html

rods in carb

Thanks, for the info. I have to take the carb apart to clean it anyway so I will look for them. I have cleaned it all out before but did not notice them though. I am going to have to study this more. I did get a lot of good info from the website you left.

I did lean out my choke even more and it starts better now.
I have a big comp cam in this little 305 and have had to advance my base timing quite a bit also. I must have done something right cause it is -4 degrees out this morning and the damm thing started no problem.

There's a couple of torx screws holding down a couple of small overs on the top just behind the choke tower. If you loosen them enough to twise the covers out of the way, the power pistons and rods will pop up and you'll be able to see them.
