Electric choke question
Electric choke question
What year did the Rochester Quadrajets go to the electric choke?
Also, can anyone make a reccomendation as to a specific year and application Q-jet I should look for?

Did you ask this on another forum?
I know of mid-late '70's that had the hot air choke, although the electric was available as well. I believe all computer-controlled carbs had electric choke.
What kind of q-jet are you looking for? CC, or non-CC? What will you be doing with it?

Im looking for a non-cc Q-jet. Im still in the planning stages of the motor the carb would be feeding, but most likely a modded 305, or a fairly mild 350. It would be in an 86 IROC that was converted to non-CCC before I owned it. It currently has no motor.
Actually, let me back up. Is an electric choke considerably if at all better than a hot-air choke? I figured i would go with electric because im not sure if my intake has provisions for a hot air choke. if I were to get a hot air choke carb, would I be limited to an older stock manifold, or are there good aftermarket units that would work?

The electric is superior in operation, in my opinion, having had both. Plus, as you note, you need a manifold specificly designed for hot air in order to use it (my GMPP manifold is set up for it, FWIW). The tubes required never seem to fit quite right, get plugged, etc.
You can put an electric thermostat in place of the hot air (just plug the hose nipple on the housing). I've done that on a few orginally-hot-air carbs, including an Edelbrock q-jet I'm currently running on my '84 full-size van.
