stock carb questions
stock carb questions
I have a 85 Z28 lt4 305. My first question is- What kind of carb do I have. My second question is- are there any cheap, easy mods to gain any more sound or horsepower out of my carb without buying anything? I already flipped air cleaner lid to increase airflow. Please help, need power!

Step 1: flip the air cleaner lid back over right. You have decreased the space above the carb to a little narrow slit between the lid and the top of the carb. All you have done, is to re-calibrate your butt dyno, by making the motor produce more noise.
The LG4 needs exhaust, all the way from the heads to the street, for some other 3rd gen besides the LG4; a cam; and gears. None of it is cheap. Dinking with the carb won't give you much.
Unbolting thing from off of the top of the motor and re-bolting big shiny chrome ones is a waste of money. Resist the temptation and work on the things that are actually limiting your performance.

The carb is not the problem
RB is correct. Your stock carb is not a restriction. If the cat is 18 years old, it is plugged-up. Also a new cat-back exhaust system is around $200. Check out the exhaust tech board for info.

if you want to add a little more power, and some sound, and you don't have to worry too much about emmissions, then take off your catalytic converter, which should be pretty easy as long as none of the bolts are too rusted, and then take a crow bar, tire iron or some other heavy metal object, and a hammer and use them to loosen up all of that crap in the cat, and dump it out, and just empty the whole thing, make sure not to puncture it, or the small air tube that goes in the side and through the middle. and also get a mask to wear while you do this, and dispose of the crap well, it turns into dust really easily, and you don't want to breath it in.
the best way I found to empty it out, is to hammer the crow bar into the junk inside and then twist it around loosen some of it up, and then turn it around and spray water with a hose into it and let the stuff run out the other side, and then repeat till it's all gone, plus that cuts down on dust.
I did this with my car, and it actually gave my car some tone, instead of dead quiet. and increased my top end power, and suprisingly really didn't decrase my bottom end power. plus it costs nothing, and is pretty easy and no'one can tell that your cat doesn't still function just by looking at it.
also try advancing your timing some, mabee one or two degrees and see if it helps. you can also take off your smog pump belt, if you don't need it, where you live. and disconnect your air conditioning also.
hope this helps some.

if your car is stock, then it has a computer controlled quadrajet, which, contrary to many people's opinions, is a good carb, that you can get good performance and decent gas milage from.
also you may want to just do a tune up, like replace plugs, wires, cap, rotor, change the oil, tranny fluid and filter. rebuild the carb, and if you do those you will probably have a noticable increase in performance.
