How do you get fuel pump out!

I got the fuel tank out (sort of) I didn't bother lowering the axle but I got it out enough to get to the fuel pickup assembly (it's not exactly safe but it's all I can do), now how do I get it out of the tank. One shop manual says I need a special tool (but I'd rather not buy tool just for this) while the other says to loosen the bolts (but there are no bolts). How do I get the fuel pump out to change it!

on the top of the tank you will see fuel lines coming out of the tank, this is the sending unit and fuel pump assembly. You will find a RING that retains it to the tank.Carefully rotate the retainer ring counter clockwise until it releases the sending unit *** from the tank....be careful not to bend or ruin anything while turning the retainer ring. After you remove the ring the sending unit *** will be free to remove from the tank...DON"T MUSCLE IT OUT ..take your time and carefully remove it....you may need to turn it in different directions to get it out.You sould also replace the large oring under the sending unit when reassembling the unit into the tank.

i've looked at that ring but it seems like there are some tabs that need to be pushed out of the way.

The whole ring turns; it's sort of like a big nut. It loosens about 1/8 turn or so and comes off.

Don't bend anything. Everything is supposed to stay straight and flat. If you bend it, it will almost certainly leak when you put it back in.

well, i got that ring off...i just realized that i now have to drop the rear end out of the way to drop the tank. I got all of the bolts off to drop it but now my fabbed dual exhaust is in the way so I now have to figure out how to get it out of the way to drop the rear.
