1903 edelbrock carb to electric choke coversion

ok i have an 87 camaro with a 305 in it. it was just givin to me with some edelbrock parts to go with it but i have to put every thing on. it ended up that the manifold didnt fit so i had to buy a new one( anyone want to buy) performer series. then it also came wiht a edelbrock q-jet carb part # 1903 which comes with a hot air style choke. is it possoible/hard/cheap to convert it over to electric choke. and with it cvause major problems putting it on my car cause the stock carb has electric inputs and the edelbrock doesnt is there a way to bypass those and do it manaully

Welcome aboard.

California? Forget the Edelbrock. You need the computer (electronic) controls.

But, to answer the question: I took the choke thermostat off the factory q-jet and put it on in place of the hot air thermostat on the 1903 (this was on a non computer controlled engine).

1. There isn't a different "performance" CC carb.

2. You don't need a different carb for performance.

What's holding your engine back are air cleaner, exhaust, and cam. To a lesser extent, heads. To a really small extent, intake manifold.

You fix this by:
a. Dual snorkel air cleaner. Either a used factory part, or fabricate one (there's a tech article on it from the site home www.thirdgen.org).
b. Headers, high-flow 3" cat, & cat-back. Stay away from anything that is made for your application, as it will retain the restrictions of the factory system.
c. Computer-compatible cam. I love mine. At a minimum, you'll need a & b first, and new valve springs when you do the cam.

Then:
d. Heads. Either port your factory parts and have 1.94" intake valves installed, or go with World S/R 305's with at a minimum pocket porting (also called bowl work).

e. Intake isn't a big deal, but a Weiand Action+ or GMPP (like used on their ZZ4 crate engine) is an improvement. The Performer is a stock replacement, not enough better than factory to warrant the expense. Or, gasket-match the factory intake.

The carb can be tuned for better performance. There is also a tech article on that subject on this board.

I'll include my sig so you can see what I've done. It passed Colorado inspection & dyno emissions test (every bit as tough as California's) with flying colors in November.

In your case, the best thing it's for is barter/trade material.

Recently, a member has been maintaining that you can use a non-CC carb as long as you retain everything else. That goes against everything I've heard on this board, but I haven't tried it myself.

Truth is, for a daily driver, the CC carb is much, much better than the Edelbrock.
