carb and wiring harness question
carb and wiring harness question
I just bought an 89 Formula rolling chassis. The car was originally a TBI car. My question is since I am going with a carb motor, what parts of the wiring harness if any do I need to keep? I may do a custom dash with aftermarket gauges and I figure they will all require the sensors and such that will come with package. I do want to keep all the power acc. though (windows, mirrors, etc).
Any help would be appreciated,
Thanks,
Chris

Car: 1989 Firebird Formula
Engine: Internal Combustion
Transmission: Completed
Axle/Gears: ones that turn.
Having a rolling chassis is one step ahead of what I started with! http://www.hioutput.com/pete/formula/formula.html
I ended up reworking the harnesses from an 86 to work with the carbed engine, but that was just me - plus the original harness was fried.
In your case, you should be able to eliminate everything that runs into the engine compartment from the passenger side fender area. Unplug and remove the ECM up under the passenger side of the dash, but leave the yellow plastic box and it's wiring in place - you'll need that to run the speedometer.
All the sensors for the gauges run into the engine compartment beside the brake booster.

Yup, that huge chunk of wires running into the computer from the passenger side fender ...GONE. When I converted to carb from TPI I cut that huge chunk of wires then individually followed each one to its respective sensor or relay. I ended up with only 3 relays under my hood (electric fan, fuel pump, and foglights)
It looks like a real fun job at first but once you start cutting you should be alright. All you need to keep (obviously) is the power and tach wires going to the distributor, the starter wiring, the windshield wiper wiring (if you want it), alternator wiring, and the coolant temp sensor for the gauge. Buy a Haynes manual or something with a wiring diagram. Remember, take your time and understand where every wire is going one by one then decide if it belongs to any of the listed above items.
