Re: mc solenoid

Hi, I know this is a very old post, but I am having this exact same problem, and this is the only posting I can find about this. Before I start a new one, I was wondering if you ever figured out what was wrong with yours?? any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Re: mc solenoid

Unplugging the MCS will cause the carb to run super rich, with the primary rods completely out of the jets. If your engine only runs full rich, with the MCS unplugged, first check to see that the MCS is clicking (10 times a second) when the key is turned to 'run' (and the MCS is plugged in).

It does click , but my problem is that with it unplugged it runs perfectly fine, but as soon as I plug it in it dies, or if i try and start it it will start and die immediately. I need it plugged in to pass smog

Re: mc solenoid

I am having the same issue..Engine light came on a few weeks ago after I degreased the engine compartment, car has been sitting for 2 yrs.nasty..anyhow, there was no more 'clicking' as you turn the ignition to on/acc

Light still on..Runs fine..No codes..Not even code 12. Looked at the fuses, and ENG CLN was blown. replaced the fuse. This time I was able to jump from A to B and get code 12.. Check engine light is no longer on. However, the car is tough to start, rough idle, and dies after about 10 seconds of running/idling time.

So, I can drive it when I unclip the MCS wire from the carb..It drives like it has for the past few weeks. Not too bad..There is a slight sluggish hesitation if you ease on the throttle. And i do notice a decrease in performance from when the MCS was operating properly..I need to smog the car, and can't with the current set up..

What was it that you did to fix your problem.?.

DO i need a new MCS..And what would cause it to pop the fuse. Perhaps it got moist or something.I was pretty careful when rinsing tho.. ANy thoughts would greatly help

Take the carb off and pull the top off the carb. What I found was one of the tiny springs were broke off the primary metering rod. The spring keeps it from staying down in the jet. Before you do that.....I had a lean condition,... didn't seem to show up on the a/f ratio because of the duel plane manifold separates the two engine banks. The tiny spring broke for the opposite bank. The M/C didn't give me code until I unplugged it. Unplugged... the engine ran better. The M/C did not tick with key on...it had to be persuaded to tick...use a straw and position it on top of the solenoid hanger on top of the carb you can see and feel it pulse. With the spring broken the metering rod hanger was slightly cocked and would not rebound fully when pulsed.
However...the mixture control solenoid does not come with the springs. Get a new one anyway a rob the springs from another carb
