Two Air Filters...Whats that all about???

Hi all,

my Car is a 1986 5.0 Trans Am with the roch CC Qjet carb and 160 bhp dog slow spec, (well its a bit more now)

I've just ordered a replacement K&N filter to fit in the air can.

When getting the old one out to check its size I noticed a second round metal filter inside the normal air filter. This effectivly blocked half of the normal air filter off. It seamed to serve no purpose at all so I've wripped it out ...... Anyone know why it was there.

Cheers

It's a charcoal bed to absorb fuel vapors that come out of the carb fuel bowl vent when the engine isn't running. When the engine is started again, the incoming air pulls the vapors back out of the charcoal.

THANKS for the reply, when i look at the old filter the bottom half looks near unused and the top half is clogged,

I take it removing this part can only have a good effect on performance? It seams to run better already

Cheers

The bottom being clean is probably as much a function of the drop-base getting in the way as much as that charcoal piece.

But, the freer path should help it breath a little better. Dual snorkels would help even more.

Hi,
I've never known a Car in the UK to have one.... Anyway mine has been ripped out for a few weeks now. I've go a new K&N filter and I've taken the belt off the smog pump...... It seems to run a lot better.

Cant wait for the 350 and 6 speed manual !!!

cheers
