Holly 600-650 on a stock 305?

seems like a bit much but its all I've got for now. Did this because the old TBI setup was having computer problems. Error code 43, I troubleshoot that till it made me sick so I shelled out the cash for parts to get it running without the ECM.

The question is.... is this to much for the 305 and how to eat more gas without spending to much in parts. Dont really want to fix up a 305. The car runs alot better now then it did with the computer problems. When in over drive it will bog down a bit and does not shift gears at the correct RPM. This could be a problem with the kickdown cable, it might have a bit of slack. But manually shifting gears I can get it to wrap out and go faster then I've ever felt that 305 go before, but still since I drove it like **** for so long Its hard to tell how fast it is really sopossed to pick up. So if there is room for tweaking I was wondering about the Jets. What I hear is that someone had put 60 or 65s in here. I went to the parts store and they only had 70s. Some people say that its putting out to much gas some people say its not putting out enough gas. I guess what my first question is, is what size jet would be proper to put on a holly 600-650 that is bolted onto a stock 305?

Well.. Anyway I guess what would be a good move is to buy the 64-99 assortment kit from holly.

Part number: HLY-36-181

But I'm wondering if the Jets in this carb already being the smallest ones, I wonder if they are just slightly to small. If 64 is as low as it goes and it bogs down, just upping it to 70 might help. I would blow the money on that case of Jets as soon as I save up enough for a 350 project but for now, woulnt you think the 70s are worth a shot?

As far as the tv cable, adjust it before you cook the trans.
In regard to the jetting.
Pull a couple spark plugs and inspect the color of the porcelain. Hopefully they were new plugs to begin with.
They should be tan in color.

K, I'll see about getting that cable tighter then what it is. Gonna have to buy one of those adjustable brackets for 20 bucks, guess thats better then buying a new trans. Other then the trans shifting at the wrong RPM and a small bog down, it runs a hell of alot stronger then before. Would rather have it bog down every now and then rather then the computer readjusting the timing to make it as slow as a honda.

A 600-650 carb should work fine on a 305.

I'd put the carb on as it comes, out of the box. With the smaller motor, I certainly wouldn't just arbitrarily declare smaller jets into it; since it will likely come set up for a 350, the jets are probably already too small for a 305. One of the most amusing myths in all of the car hobby is the notion that a smaller motor requires smaller jets in a carb than an otherwise identical (cam especially) larger motor would require in the same carb; that's exactly backwards.

Run it, look at the plugs as described above, exercise it through all sort sof driveability stuations such as cruise, light acceleration in high gear, idle, etc. etc., and see what it does, before just hacking into it and twiddling with it.
