sullenoid looking thing, what is it

Hey guys,

This is not necessarily a camaro question, but I am helping out a friend and need to get this done so I can get back to stripping my camaro.

Here's the deal. He brought it a 73 vette stingray which has rochester qjet (although it says Carter on it). I am sure someone here saw these. On the driver side in front of a throttle there is a sullenoid looking device which looks like it is pushing against the throttle when energized.
Anyone know what it is? Does it have any adjustments we need to be aware of?

Since this is a one time job, he only bought Haynes manual and it doesn't even mention that thing (although there is one picture where the device is visible, but picture is not about that)

We bought a new carb and the car doesn't seem to be running up to par. There is some popping (possibly backfiring) noises coming from the exhaust. We are planning to attempt a tune up session tomorrow, so any info you guys can give me would be most appreciated

TIA

Probably a throttle kicker to raise the idle speed when the A/C is on.

And its "solenoid"

exhaust popping (or ticking as it's been described) can often be traced to an exhaust leak.

On certain years of cars, that solenoid was an "anti-dieseling" one.... it was engaged at all times when the engine was running, held the throttle open at all times. and was used to set the idle speed; then when ignition was turned off, it dropped out and allowed the throttles to close much farther than the normal setting, to lower the idle speed so low that the car wouldn't run on. Early smogger motors had a major problem with that. Seems like about 71-76 cars were particularly likely to come with that.

Thanks guys,

I guess I can watch the thing closer and see when it is getting energized. It'll be either when ignition is on, or when A/C is turned on.
