Choke not coming clear off.

Car has just lately started to not have the choke come completely off. Have voltage to the choke heater. Choke levers/mechinism moving freely. Can a choke heater go bad? any ideas?

Yes they can go bad.

Check to make sure it's securely grounded.... current flows from the wire, through the heater, out around a metal strip around the edge of teh heater to the bowl looking thing it sits in, to the carb body, to the engine.... if any of those grounding points aren't making good contact, current can't flow.

If they're good, then it's time for a new choke heater / thermostat.

thanks RB, I took out the 3 rivets and removed the thermostat, attached the connection (blade) directly to Batt 12V and grounded the metal on the other side (not the copper coil) to the battery ground. The core of the coil did not get hot at all. I assume that means a new choke thermostat, unless I did not connect to the correct things.

should that test work?

If i get a new one would another GM one be best, or the GP Sorensen at Advance Auto be fine.
thanks again,
phil
