open element fitment

i have a dual snorkel air cleaner, but it's not in the best shape, nor do i have the ducts to it. so i went out and bought an edelbrock 14x3 open element filter, and i bought some mr. gasket air cleaner spacers. without any of the spacers, the filter hits one of the spark plugs wires on the distributor. if i turn the spark plug boot to the side, i can squeeze it in there. with the 1" spacer on, the air cleaner clears the spark plug wire, but it pushes against the hood. i can shut the hood, but if i watch it as the hood is almost closed, the air cleaner starts to push up against the hood liner. is it a problem if the air cleaner is pressed right up against one of the spark plug wires? if i use the spacer, how can i tell exactly how much room i really have? is it ok for the cleaner to be pressed right up against the hood?

How much does it touch the wire? Mine barely touches the wire, but I still have to re-route the wires to look a little cleaner.
